Holiday Houseguests - Homeowners - Coach Realtors

If you have a big family or family out of town, the holidays probably mean that you're either traveling or hosting. Unless you host frequently, you'll most likely need to do a little prep work to prepare your home for house guests. Here are five tips from our REALTORS® on how to win at hosting for the holidays.

  1. Deep clean.
If you have guests coming, the first thing you'll want to do is clean the house. Even if you normally do light cleanings as time permits, consider this your chance for a deep clean! Start your thorough cleaning a week or two beforehand so you won't be rushed, saving the guest areas for last. The day before your guests arrive, walk through the house, put away any clutter, and do a light once-over of anything that's gotten dirty again.
  2. Plan the sleeping arrangements.
Unless you already have guest rooms with enough space for your extended family, you'll most likely need to plan to make sure everyone has a place to sleep. This is the perfect time to do a little tweaking to make the guest room work for an entire family by installing cots or making space for a Pack 'n Play. Refresh the sheets, prep the sofa bed, round up enough pillows, and set up conveniences, such as bedside lights that can be operated from the bed and a couple of empty drawers or closet space for unpacking.
  3. Prep the bathrooms.
While preparing sleeping areas for your guests, don't forget to prep the bathrooms! Pay special attention to the primary bathroom your guests will use, whether a shared one or a dedicated guest bathroom. Make sure you stock it with extra towels, washcloths, toilet paper, and hand soap. For a nice extra touch, fill a basket on the counter with a couple of new toothbrushes and sample bottles of products, just in case they've forgotten anything.
  4. Stock the kitchen.
Before your guests arrive, ask if they have any food allergies or preferences for you to be aware of. Then, plan your menu and make a trip to the grocery store. Be sure to stock up on snacks and other food to have on hand during their visit in addition to planned meals. You can arrange fruit and snacks in decorative baskets on the counter and in the pantry like you see staged in many Suffolk County homes for sale.
  5. Set up a self-serve beverage station.
Take a cue from Nassau County homes for sale, and if you don't have one in your kitchen already, set up a trendy hot beverage station. Carve out a dedicated area for the coffee maker and related appliances, then stock it with plenty of coffee, tea, mugs, sweetener, and everything else your guests might want. A coffee station will enable early risers to start their day even if you're not awake yet to play host.

There's nothing like a cozily crowded house around the holidays, but if it feels too crowded, it may be time for an upgrade. Contact us today if you're ready to start your search for a new home, and you could be hosting in style next holiday season.
